What makes this clip engaging is that at the start you see Stoick readying his sword for a battle but when he realizes that it isn't an enemy but his long lost wife he is awe struck.
As Valka stammers to explain why she never came back Stoick just slowly goes to her and as Valka waits to hear how angry Stoick is at her, all stoick says is how beatiful she is when he lost her. That scene really pulled at my heart strings and was not what we would expect from Stoick, a tough and hard headed leader of a viking, to be so emotionally happy instead of angry but at the same time he is a loving family man so it is still in character for him.
The other reason the scene is engaging is because it has an increasing tension from when stoick drops his sword and starts walking towards Valka and the dragons around her are readying themselves to attack, to when the tension is broken when Stoick finally says his line to her after the building pause of Stoick not saying a word until he finally gets to her.
